PepsiCo India Partners with Project Mumbai’s 'Jallosh - Clean Coasts' Drive

The initiative witnessed participation of organisations like Beach Please, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), River March, Beach Warriors, Mahim Beach Clean Up etc

PepsiCo India Partners with Project Mumbai’s 'Jallosh - Clean Coasts' Drive

PepsiCo India announced its partnership with Project Mumbai, a not-for-profit organisation, to participate in “Jallosh- Clean Coasts”, the biggest clean-up of Mumbai beaches and rivers on June 1. The initiative kicked off from Mithi River and was being organised simultaneously across 9 beaches and 4 rivers across Mumbai. The drive is in line with the Government of India’s vision of “Clean India” (Swachh Bharat Abhiyan) and is being supported by other renowned institutions such as World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), River March, Beach Warriors, Mahim Beach Clean Up, Beach Please! etc 

The initiative saw the presence of Mr. Shishir Joshi, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder, Project Mumbai, Ms. Neelima Dwivedi, Vice President, Government Affairs, PepsiCo India and India’s leading travel celebrity Shenaz Treasury. In addition, the Clean Coasts drive also saw participation from thousands of other volunteers drawn from the corporate world, educational institutions, NGOs and citizen groups.

Jallosh-Clean Coasts was simultaneously also activated across popular beach stretches of Mumbai’s Girgaon Chowpatty, Worli, Dadar, Mahim, Bandra, Versova, Juhu and Madh, along with banks of the four rivers that run across the city - Poisor, Mithi, Oshiwara and Dahisar. The 3-day drive will culminate on the World Environment Day, 5th June. 

 Speaking at the launch of the event, Shishir Joshi, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder, Project Mumbai, said,

Project Mumbai has consistently aimed at bringing like-minded institutions together for a common larger initiative, which can lead to social transformation, through scale. Our purpose is to work for people and positive change. Jallosh-Clean Coasts is one more such massive PPPP initiative, bringing People (citizens) Public (the state and city administration) Private (the corporates) under one roof one cause, to protect and clean Mumbai and MMR's water bodies. Delighted to have PepsiCo as one of the champion partners aboard Jallosh.

Elaborating on PepsiCo India’s commitment towards managing plastic waste, Ms. Neelima Dwivedi, Vice President, Government Affairs PepsiCo India, said,

PepsiCo recognizes the significance of reducing the impact of plastic packaging on the environment, and collaborating with partner organizations to drive a larger impact for the society. Our Sustainable Plastics Vision has rooted around: ‘Reducing, Recycling and Reinventing our Plastic Packaging Waste’; and our target is to transform 100 percent of our packaging recyclable, compostable, or biodegradable by 2025. PepsiCo has been actively working across multiple States to collect, segregate and sustainably recover 100 per cent of its plastic packaging, towards effective plastic waste management by 2021. She futher said “PepsiCo India would like to congratulate Project Mumbai for organizing Jallosh on such a massive scale as a run up to World Environment Day.

 Malhar Kalambe, founder of Beach Please and a UN award recipient said,

We are happy with the energy and enthusiasm that Project Mumbai.org is injecting into the clean-up scene. We need such multilateral engagements to beat the plastic problem. Looking forward to more people to join us for our initiatives as we move forward to our dream of a cleaner and better environment."

As part of the Clean Coasts drive, PepsiCo India saw the participation of its volunteering employees. In addition, the Company also deployed special collection trucks at all locations to enable the transportation of the collected plastic waste through its Waste management partner GEM Enviro. All plastic waste collected from the drive will be segregated, cleaned and converted into useful new usable products such as t-shirts, bins, traffic cones and chairs.
