On Tuesday, July 26, the Shinde government banned plastic-coated products in Maharashtra, reports stated. Presently, the usage of cups, plates, bowls, spoons, and containers in single-use plastic is banned in the state. However, plastic coated or laminated products are prominently used in the market. This is done in the veil of paper like dishes, containers, cups and glasses, even though these items also have plastic.

Based on accounts, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde after the meeting elaborated on how the government has banned plastic-coated products to hinder the influx of substandard plastic that is a threat to decomposition. He was quoted saying that the Maharashtra government has decided to ban plastic-coated products in the state.

Taking into account the serious issues that resulted because of the use of plastic in Maharashtra, Shinde at the meeting asked that the plastic ban rule be amended. While the Union has banned single-use plastic from July 1, 2022, Shinde instructed the administration to strictly implement the same in Maharashtra. Owing to this resolution, Maharashtra has become the first state in India to ban single-use plastic, Shinde claimed, mentioned narratives.

Recently, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to re-initiate the drive against banned plastic in Mumbai, which had come to halt in the city during COVID-19. The civic body alerted the public through a notice issued on June 1 that stringent action will be taken against those using banned plastic, including single-use disposable plastic.
