On Sunday, May 2, Pune recorded the second wettest day in May since 2011. According to reports, within less than an hour, both Pashan and Shivajinagar areas reported incessant rainfall and gusty winds while the rest of the areas in the city experienced light intensity rainfall.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Shivajinagar recorded 26.8 mm on Sunday. Heavy rainfall happens to be an uncommon occurrence over Pune during the peak summer month of May.

However, the IMD has informed that the current weather of Maharashtra is being governed by the prevailing trough line running between Northeast Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha, another trough between Vidarbha and South Tamil Nadu along with the presence of an upper air cyclonic circulation over Marathwada.

On the other hand, earlier on April 29, the IMD predicting a severe weather alert for Maharashtra over the next four days stated that areas of Marathwada, Madhya Maharashtra and Vidarbha likely to receive heavy showers and hailstorms.

According to reports, a spokesperson working with the regional forecasting centre in Mumbai cautioned that thunderstorm activity in interior Maharashtra will likely intensify between May 29 and May 2. “Thunderstorm with lightning, rain and gusty winds,” are to be expected in these regions.

The monsoon season in India usually lasts from June-September with large areas of western and central India receiving more than 90 per cent of their total annual precipitation during the period, and southern and northwestern India receiving 50 per cent to 75 per cent of their total annual rainfall.
