Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) in Borivali, Mumbai was filled with hope on March 25, as a rare birth of four tiger cubs in captivity took place. However, the joy quickly turned to tragedy as three of the four cubs died due to health issues, leaving one in critical condition.

This is the first time in 13 years that young tigers were born at the park, making the loss even more devastating for the staff and officials at SGNP.

The Chief of the SGNP's tiger and lion safari, RFO Vijay Barabde, confirmed that the cubs died due to lung-related complications and infections. The two remaining underweight cubs are being treated at the park's dispensary. The mother of the cubs, Srivalli, was brought to SGNP in March 2022 after being rescued from the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra's Chandrapur region. Bajirao, their father, was also saved from Chandrapur and brought to SGNP in 2020.

The death of three of the four cubs is alarming, and it is crucial to determine if a suitable medical examination was performed while the mother was pregnant. Proper attention must be given to cubs after birth.

The park authorities are working towards creating a safe and healthy environment for the remaining cub. The incident underscores the importance of conservation efforts and the need for sustainable practises to protect endangered species. The authorities will investigate the incident and take corrective measures to ensure the safety and well-being of the animals.

The captive tiger and lion safari at SGNP, which began in the 1990s, is a significant tourism attraction. Currently, there are four tigresses in the park: Bijali, Lakshmi, Mohini, and Srivalli, along with two males, Bajirao and Chandra.
