The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and Palghar, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, extremely heavy rainfall, and strong winds reaching speeds of 40–60 km/h. The weather conditions are expected to cause widespread disruptions to daily activities and transportation.

Residents of India’s financial capital woke up to heavy rainfall on Wednesday morning following an overnight downpour, marking the arrival of the southwest monsoon in the city.

As intense rainfall continued across parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, the IMD issued a three-hour red alert for Mumbai and Palghar at 4 a.m. on Wednesday. The advisory warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, very heavy rain, and gusty winds of 40–60 km/h.

The southwest monsoon advanced into Mumbai on Tuesday, bringing much-needed relief from the scorching summer heat. In a statement, the IMD said, “The southwest monsoon has further advanced into the remaining parts of the central Arabian Sea, some more parts of Maharashtra including Mumbai, the remaining parts of Telangana and Odisha, and parts of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Bihar.”

The normal date for the onset of the monsoon in Mumbai is June 10. According to IMD data, the monsoon arrived even later in 2023, making landfall on June 25. The department noted that the most delayed monsoon arrivals were recorded in 1974 and 1958, when it reached the city on June 28.

Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that all major subways in the city remained open on Tuesday and traffic movement was largely normal. According to the civic body, suburban railway services operated without disruption, while BEST bus services also continued smoothly despite the heavy rainfall.
