Mahatma Gandhi once said, "Sanitation is more important than independence". He made cleanliness and sanitation an integral part of the Gandhian way of living. To celebrate Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary ALLEN Career Institute in association with Afroz Shah, UN Environment’s champion of the Earth organized a cleanup drive with the theme — #SwachBharatAbhiyan with an aim to make India clean and healthy.

Students turned up in large numbers at the beach early morning on Wednesday and collected piles of garbage from Versova beach for nearly two hours. Further, the students found that the area was littered with various plastic materials and wastes.  During the drive, plastic waste was collected and handed over to the municipal authorities for proper disposal.

More than 1500 students studying at ALLEN participated in the drive, led by Mr. Brajesh Maheshwari, Director of Allen Career Institute.

Speaking on the clean-up drive, Mr. Brajesh Maheshwari, Director of Allen Career Institute says “People across India would gather together to observe Gandhi Jayanti on his 150th birth anniversary on 2nd October, I am proud that ALLEN Mumbai team participated in huge numbers for the clean-up. It’s being the third year that large number of students become a part of the ALLEN’s Swach Bharat Mission by cleaning various public places and beautifies them with Rangoli, paintings and messages on cleanliness on play carts at various locations like beaches, railway stations, bus stands, parks etc. This is just a small step to inculcate great values among our students to make them a responsible citizen and also to make our country a better place to live. We can really make a difference by empowering people to take an active role in cleaning our country. We need to join hands keeping the future of our country in mind”.

“On the ‘International Coastal Cleanup Day’ ALLEN Mumbai team and the student fraternity had carried out the Versova beach clean-up drive. And a similar clean-up drive was carried out on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. We believe that the clean-up drive is a continuous activity and ALLEN preaches to carry out on consistent basis. We believe in spreading awareness towards minimizing the use of plastic among the students,” added Mr. Maheshwari.
