The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad adding that rainfall is likely due to the low-pressure weather system. It has also warned that thunderstorms and lightning can also be expected on Tuesday, October 20. The low-pressure weather system may further intensify the rains in parts of central India, interior Maharashtra along with the possibility of thunderstorms over interior Konkan too.

The state of Maharashtra has recorded 16 per cent excess rain this year, with Marathwada recording surplus rain throughout the season. Even though average rainfall of 19 per cent is termed normal, Marathwada has clocked 30 per cent more downpour than the seasonal average at 866.1 mm rain. However, three districts in Vidarbha, namely, Amravati (-20), Akola (-27) and Yavatmal (-24) – recorded deficient rainfall.

Back in September, Mumbai experienced continual downpour across the city. This resulted in a massive amount of waterlogging which was reported at the Sion station on the Central Railway line. Moreover, many roads in Hindmata, Lalbaug, Andheri, Malad, Borivali, Kurla, Matunga had been submerged leading to the civic body appealing to non-essential business establishments to remain closed. Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh had also requested people to remain indoors and not venture out unnecessarily.
