There has been massive dumping of debris, earth and stones within less than 100 metres of Mumbai's Vihar lake. Apart from this, there has been a massive cutting of trees and hills close to the lake.

The road is being developed as a part of Maharashtra Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray's cycling track project. The cycle track will be 39km long from Mulund to Wadala along the Tansa water pipeline.

The work was underway on the Tulsi water mains but not on the road, as reported by the Times of India.

The Bombay High Court (HC) has already ordered a stay on constructing the cycle track. However, debris and stones can be seen at different places close to the lake.

Amrita Bhattacharjee of the Aarey Conservation Group said that the hills have been cut to create the new road adjacent to an existing rail track. It is used by the water supply department to attend to leakages on the trunk mains.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is also planning to build a cycle track on the sidewalk along the protective wall around the Mahalaxmi race course.

Meanwhile, the HC has also restrained the civic body from constructing a cycle track along Powai lake till January 31, 2022.
