According to the latest reports, Mumbai has been recognized as the “2021 Tree City of the World” by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (UN) together with the Arbor Day Foundation.

Officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) garden department were quoted in accounts elaborating on how Mumbai has received this recognition for its “commitment to growing and maintaining urban trees and greenery in building healthy, resilient and happy cities”.

Based on narratives, the BMC’s garden department was apprised of the recognition via email on April 6, by the CEO of Arbor Day Foundation, Dan Lambe.

Jeetendra Pardeshi, Superintendent of the gardens department was quoted in a report by the Indian Express elucidating that the United Nations “Tree City of the World” program offers direction, help and international recognition for those dedicated to its urban forest. Apart from this, he added that it offers a framework for a healthy sustainable urban forestry.

Pardeshi added that the corporation had applied for the recognition in January while remarking its initiative for tree plantation, Miyawaki forests and several innovative tree care activities.

Recently, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray informed the state legislative council that Mumbai suburban district has lost 1.08 sq km of mangrove area between 2021 and 2019. The figure is reported in the recently published India State Forest Report 2021.
