India’s sports media brand, Sports Illustrated India Magazine (SI) had organised their sixth edition of ‘Maruti Suzuki Sportsman of the Year’ awards ceremony on Thursday, July 6.
10 m Air Rifle shooter and Olympic Gold Medalist, Abhinav Bindra, won the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’. Whereas, Rio Olympics Silver Medalist and India’s badminton ace, PV Sindhu, won the 'Sportsperson of the Year' award on Thursday night.
Former sprinter, Milkha Singh won the ‘Living Legend’ award.
Abhinav Bindra felt a little old when he was awarded the lifetime achievement award at the age of 34.
I have been involved in this field since I was 12. I never had exceptional talent but I was determined to work had and that’s the reason I have managed to reach this feat," says Bindra.
Pullela Gopichand was honoured with the ‘Coach of the Year’ award for guiding the likes of Saina Nahwal, PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth and many others in the field of badminton in the last few years. He received the award from his student, PV Sindhu.
