On Monday, March 14, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stated that action will be undertaken against those citizens who cut or damage trees during the Holi festival, stated reports. In light of this, they have urged the locals to protect the environment.

According to reports, to keep an eye on tree cutting, strict action will be undertaken against tree cutting, remarked officials from the civic authority. Traditionally, on the eve of Holi, a pyre of wood and tree branches are burnt for “Holika Dahan”. This phenomenon can be seen in many residential areas in Mumbai.

A BMC official was quoted in an account elaborating on how through the provisions of the Maharashtra Trees Protection and Conservation Act, it is an offence to cut down any tree without the permission of local forest and tree authorities.

The official added that if anyone is caught, they can be imprisoned for a week or a year and could have to pay a penalty ranging from INR 1,000 to INR 5,000. This will be done in accordance with the violation’s nature.

Based on narratives, at the ward level, civic officials will be vigilant about tree cutting activities through the assistance of surveillance teams, claimed officials. Since in the last few years public gatherings weren’t permitted, thus, speculations can be made that citizens will celebrate the festivity this time around.
