Several activities in the state of Maharashtra have been cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak and the lockdown. Amidst this, the state government has requested many associations to either cancel the festivities or celebrate in a simple manner.

In a recent decision, BJP leader Ram Kadam has decided to cancel this year's Dahi Handi celebration. Every year, he organizes the activities in Ghatkopar and over the years has gained popularity,  with thousands of people attending the festival. Besides this, many celebrities and personalities also grace the event.

The leader took to Twitter to announce the same. The decision was taken considering the coronavirus outbreak, where since thousands of people will attend the festival, it could increase the risk as social distancing norms may not be followed.

This is the second year in a row where he has decided to cancel the celebrations. In 2019, Ram Kadam decided to cancel the festivities because of the floods in Maharashtra. He said that the festival can be celebrated in a simple manner, and it was not necessary to spend money for the festivities. Through this, he also paid respect to the people who suffered in the flood.

On the other hand, CM Uddhav Thackeray, in a recently held meeting with several Ganapati Mandals and associations decided that the festivities during Ganesh Chaturthi this year will also be celebrated in a simple manner. The associations agreed with his decision. Ganeshotsav this year will see no crowds or processions and CM thanked them for their support.
