On Friday, the Supreme Court has given go-ahead to three Jain temples on August 22 and 23 (Saturday and Sunday) to offer prayers on the occasion of Paryushan festival. These three Jain temples are situated in Mumbai’s Dadar, Chembur and Byculla. This relaxation has been offered so that devotees can offer prayers on the occasion of the Paryushan festival.

Leaders of the community have welcomed the move. However, they are seeking further relaxations and want that the Jain temples to remain open even beyond this time period.

The state government had earlier denied opening the temples for the Paryushan festival in the wake of coronavirus outbreak. The state felt that since the state had the maximum number of cases, it will not be advisable to open places of worship as yet. Even for the current order, the state maintains that they will implement the order issued by Supreme Court but it has no plans to offer any further relaxation to any religious place in Maharashtra including Jain temples.
