After two years, Mumbai’s last dedicated COVID-19 facility, the 460-bed state-run St George Hospital, will resume non-COVID services from tomorrow, May 5.

This development comes after this 342-year-old colonial-era structure, which is one of the four hospitals that are a part of the Sir JJ Group of Hospitals, discharged its last three coronavirus patients on Tuesday, May 3.

According to reports, the hospital will have a dedicated COVID-19 ward with 50 beds and 12 ICU beds from May 5. In last two years, 5,506 coronavirus patients were treated and discharged, whereas the hospital saw 1,119 COVID-linked deaths.

It is also pertinent to note that this comes at a time when the cases have been witnessing a slight spike in Mumbai.

As per the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, on Tuesday, Mumbai reported 100 COVID-19 cases, a return to three-figure addition to the tally for the first time after April 27, when 112 people were detected with the infection, a civic official said.

Meanwhile, in an early warning sign for Maharashtra, the state has recorded 182 cases. The highest were reported in Mumbai, followed by Pune city (35), Thane city and Navi Mumbai (nine each) and Panvel (six). Maharashtra has 1,027 active cases, of which the highest number (637) is in Mumbai.

On the other hand, hospital administration stated that in the last two weeks there has not been a single new admission. However, there will be one ward available for COVID-19 patients.

Moreover, the hospital has decided to dedicate 20 ICU beds instead of 10, which were available over the last two years. They converted three wards and outpatient departments into ICUs.

Besides, the hospital has 107 ventilators, which will now be divided between JJ Hospital, GT Hospital and Cama and Albless Maternity Hospital.
