Mumbai: 12,000 people to be vaccinated everyday

The civic body of Mumbai has set a target of immunizing 12,000 people everyday with the COVID-19 vaccine across the city.

According to sources, Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has set a target of immunizing 12,000 beneficiaries daily at all the vaccination centres.

As of now, the civic body has allotted eight centres for vaccination, however, as per reports, it has plans to increase them to 50-100. On Saturday, January 2, the BMC further announced that the vaccination process will start in Mumbai within 24 hours of the availability of the vaccine stock.

According to the plan, of the eight centres, four major civic hospitals – King Edward Memorial (KEM), BYL Nair, Cooper and Sion – have been equipped to vaccinate 2,000 people on a daily basis. The remaining four centres – Bhabha hospital (Bandra), VN Desai Hospital (Santacruz), Rajawadi Hospital (Ghatkopar) and Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital (Kandivli) will vaccinate 1,000 people every day.

Moreover, a dry run of the COVID-19 vaccination process was held at three sites each in four districts of Maharashtra- Pune, Nagpur, Jalna and Nandurbar on Saturday. This was supervised by several officers including Principal Health Secretary Dr Pradeep Vyas. In view of the situation, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope added that the process for mass vaccination shall be modelled on the Election Commission of India's polling procedure.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, January 2, Maharashtra recorded 3,218 fresh cases of the coronavirus taking the state's COVID-19 tally to 19,38,854. At present, there are 53,137 active cases in the state. With 2110 COVID-19 patients discharged in the day, the number of recovered soared to 18,34,935. On the other hand, Mumbai continues to be a major novel coronavirus hotspot with 592 fresh cases clocked in the last 24 hours.
