Amid COVID-19 cases surge in the city and the state, there has been an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in Dharavi which comes under the G-North ward.

On Tuesday, March 16 Mumbai’s largest slum colony Dharavi reported 21 new cases of COVID-19 taking the tally up to 4,279. This is the highest single-day spike. Last year Dharavi had seen 22 cases on October 6. The first case of COVID-19 was reported last year on April 1.

In January, Dharavi had reported ‘zero’ COVID-19 cases. Thereafter till February 2, Dharavi reported single-digit numbers. Furthermore, since December last year, the G-North ward has been reporting single-digit cases on most of the days.

In last week, between March 9 to March 15 in total 329 cases were reported from this ward. Meanwhile, according to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, there are four sealed buildings and one containment zone in the G-north ward.


Mumbai reported 1,922 new COVID-19 cases, 1,236 recoveries and four deaths on Tuesday, March 16, taking the total number of cases in the financial capital to 3,47,581. According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, there are 15,263 active cases and 3,19,878 patients have completely recovered so far. The death toll is at 11,539 in the city. The recovery rate stands at 92 per cent. At present 35,93,065 tests have been conducted by the BMC. There are 34 contaminated zones in slums and chawls while 246 buildings are sealed by the BMC.
