In a first, Maharashtra records more than 30,000 cases in a day

So far 53,339 COVID-related deaths have been reported from the state. Another 1,296 deaths from the state have been classified as those caused by other reasons where coronavirus infections were found to be incidental.

According to reports, the daily count of coronavirus cases in Maharashtra touched yet another high with over 30,000 infections on Sunday, March 21. The state recorded 30,535 new cases yesterday, the highest ever since the pandemic broke out in the state on March 9, 2020.

However, till just five days ago, the total number of cases for the entire country was fewer than this number.

As many as 11,314 patients were discharged from hospitals during the day, taking the total of recoveries to 22,14,867. Meanwhile, the positivity rate stands at 90.79 per cent. 

Of the new cases, Pune city accounted for 2,900 and Pimpri Chinchwad 1,416, and the rest were in the rural and cantonment areas.

Mumbai, like Maharashtra, is already scaling new heights. On Sunday, the city reported 3,779 infections, a new record. Nagpur, Thane, Nashik, Aurangabad and Jalgaon are the other cities in the state powering the surge. Nagpur reported 3,665 cases, a shade lower than the all-time high of 3,731 it achieved a day earlier.

There are 22,14,867 active cases in the state now, with the highest in Pune (42,015), followed by Nagpur (29,771), Mumbai (22,081), Thane (19,788) and Nashik (15,619).
