The areas under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) have witnessed a sudden surge in COVID-19 cases ever since the state-wide lockdown rules were eased in early June. While Mumbai is finally showing some signs of improvement, the virus has now taken on the city’s neighbouring areas. 

Navi Mumbai recorded 376 fresh coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of cases to 17,694 in the region. On Friday, 67 new patients were found in Belapur, 94 in Nerul, 36 in Vashi, 25 in Turbhe, 45 in Koparkhairane, 48 in Ghansoli, 45 in Airoli and 16 in Digha. 

In the last 24 hours, 649 people have recovered from the deadly virus in Navi Mumbai. There were 90 recovered patients from Belapur, 74 from Nerul, 92 from Vashi, 41 from Turbhe, 182 from Koparkhairane, 90 from Ghansoli, 72 from Airoli and eight from Digha. The total number of cured patients has reached 13,552 in the region.

At present, there are around 3,688 active coronavirus patients in Navi Mumbai. Eight more patients succumbed to the deadly virus in the past 24 hours and now the fatality toll in the region has reached 454. 

Concerns have been raised by parents in Navi Mumbai as the virus is not only affecting adults but also children in the area. From June 1 to July 31, the number of positive cases in the region was 13,183. Out of these, 817 children between the age group of 6 to 16 were infected with the virus, according to data released by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC).
