A team of 45 doctors from Wardha arrived in Mumbai on Tuesday to join the staff at the city’s SevenHills Hospital. These doctors arrived from the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Wardha, who made the 800-km journey on a specially assigned bus. The journey reportedly took 24 hours. SevenHills needs all the help it can get right now given that Mumbai’s COVID-19 cases are still rising.

Interestingly, Wardha is one of the least affected districts in Maharashtra with only one positive case so far. Keeping this in mind, a decision was taken to bring in doctors from the region, the authorities said.

“The 45-member team from Wardha will remain at SevenHills for 15 days. Currently, Mumbai records on an average of around 700 positive cases a day. If the need arises, we will get another batch of doctors from outside Mumbai after the Wardha team leaves,” a BMC source said.

This is the first time that doctors from outside Mumbai have come to treat COVID-19 patients in the region. Authorities hint that this may be the strategy in the coming weeks to increase the capacity of healthcare workers in the city’s hospitals.

One of the doctors who arrived from Wardha, Dr. Parikshit Chohatkar said - “We are doctors and we have to be at the frontlines during pandemics.”

Dr. TP Lahane, the head of the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) was instrumental in coordinating with the dean of the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences to bring in these doctors to the city. The dean, Dr. Nitin Gangane said that the doctors “readily agreed to travel to Mumbai”, adding that they will be quarantined for 14 days after their duties are no longer required at SevenHills.
