Mumbai, India’s financial capital, is showing some positive signs in its fight against COVID-19. With less than 500 new coronavirus cases being reported, the daily active cases have also witnessed a drop in the last few weeks. As a result, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to shut 465 COVID centres out of 517. Patients are currently being treated at the remaining 52 COVID Care Centers in the city.

As the coronavirus cases in the city have seen a sharp decline in Worli, Prabhadevi, Lower Parel, the BMC has decided to close the Jumbo COVID Center at Mahalakshmi Race Course. The centre has not seen a single patient since it was set up in July.

The Jumbo Corona Center has 900 beds spread across four waterproof hangers. Out of which, 200 oxygen beds are ready for the treatment of critically ill patients.

According to officials, three hangers, which have 700 regular beds, will be dismantled, while the fourth, with 200 oxygen-supported beds, will be kept on standby.

Officials said that the rental cost of the hangers and other equipment was one of the main reasons for the decision to shut down the centre.
