Medical institutions through the city are seeing a nearly 50% increase in the emergency number of patients with heart attacks as opposed to the peak of the second wave of the pandemic, highlighted a report by the Hindustan Times. Many, claim that this can be ascribed to the lazy lifestyle that emerged during the coronavirus lockdown and the hindrance of treatment of other ailments such as those related to cardiac during this period.

The narrative highlights statistics from the Maharashtra health department that depicts a 27% fall in hypertension and diabetes cases that could result in a cardiac arrest during the pandemic when the numbers were contrasted to 2019-20. According to the report, experts say that COVID-19 surges the possibilities of heart-related ailments which could be a significant component. They, therefore, say that more studies in regards to it need to be undertaken.

The account then goes on to mention that according to the data of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), on an average daily basis 90 people lose their lives to a heart attack. Interestingly, during the beginning of the pandemic, civic as well as private-run hospitals saw a significant fall in heart attack cases. But now with COVID-19 cases falling, in the last two three months, there has yet again been a rise in heart attack cases.

This can be attributed to the fact that during the beginning of the pandemic, people were apprehensive about visiting the hospital. Thus, many with hypertension and diabetes went undetected. 

The state health department’s data elucidate that in 2019-20, an aggregate of 173,678 patients was diagnosed with diabetes in the state, in 2020-21 this number was 127,320. In the same period, the number of hypertension patients too fell from 230,476 to 166,968.
