On Thursday, June 23, Maharashtra registered the highest since-day number of 5,218 COVID-19 cases, with Mumbai accounting for nearly half of it at 2,479. 

Further, the city registered another death which takes the aggregate tally of fatalities to 23 in June. On the other hand, Navi Mumbai also witnessed its first coronavirus-related deaths after 4 months. This transpired when a heart patient (30) succumbed to COVID-19-related complications on Thursday. 

According to reports, however, health officials are not worried about Thursday's spike in cases because they believe it includes certain backdated cases.

Whilst there was an increase in the number of cases reported on Thursday as opposed to Wednesday, June 22, the daily positivity rate has fallen to 12 per cent from 20 per cent. 

In the midst of this, many experts have been quoted in narratives elaborating on how weekly trends play a more important role when determining a COVID-19 surge. 

Maharashtra reported one fatality on Thursday, which transpired in Mumbai when a kidney patient (42) passed away because of COVID-related complications. 

Moreover, India reported 17,336 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday. This has caused the active cases toll in the country to rise to 88,284.
