On Thursday, June 16, Mumbai reported 2,366 new COVID-19 cases which caused a fourfold increase in active cases since the commencement of this month. With these updates in numbers, the present active count is at 13,005.
In accordance with the data shared by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), an average of 96 per cent of the patients detected daily are asymptomatic.
Thursday marked the second consecutive day when the number of new coronavirus cases in the city was over 2,000. On the same day, two patients, who were males between the age of 40-85 succumbed to the virus. Similarly, the number of hospitalizations also surged to 538.
Owing to this surge in cases being reported in the city, Maharashtra too witnessed an upward trend in cases. According to the health bulletin data, 4,255 people in the state were found to be infected with the virus which is reported to be the highest-single day spike since February 12.
Moreover, three fatalities were reported in the state owing to the virus. Considering these numbers, the aggregate tally of the virus in Maharashtra is 79,23,697, while the active caseload stands at 20,634. However, 2,879 people also recovered from the novel virus causing the recovery figure to increase to 77,55,183.
The numbers on Thursday are a 5.74 per cent rise in contrast to Wednesday. Additionally, so far, the state has carried out an aggregate of 8,14,72,916 tests, entailing 44,695 on Thursday.
The bulletin also showed that two more cases of the BA.5 sub-lineage of the Omicron variant of the virus were seen in the state. Both patients hailed from Nagpur and were vaccinated as well as recovered in home isolation. The patients, male (29) and female (54) were positive on June 6 and 9 respectively. Now, the aggregate of B.A.4 and B.A.5 variant cases found in Maharashtra is at 19.
