After the backlash, BMC comes up with a new system to report COVID-19 deaths

After facing a lot of criticism, regarding reported deaths, BMC has now come up with a new directive for reporting COVID-19 deaths. The civic-body has directed all hospitals to declare the backlog Covid-19 toll by June 29. In addition to this, all hospitals starting July 1 will have to declare all COVID-19 deaths in the 48 hours.

It is noteworthy that on June 8 as well, BMC had issued this notice. This is the second notice in this regards and also mentions that failure to follow these instructions, “a serious note will be taken by the municipal body and action under the Epidemic Act, 1897, will be initiated.”

As per the news agency, ANI, “There will be a new system of reporting COVID-19 deaths on a Goole Form from July 1.” To make sure that this is strictly followed, Nodal officer have been entrusted the task to make sure that all the hospitals comply to the 48-hour rule.

This step comes on the heels of allegations by Devendra Fadnavis that 1,000 deaths in Mumbai city had not been reported. On Thursday, Fadnavis, who is the leader of opposition even wrote to Uddhav Thackeray, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra alleging that 1,000 deaths in the city of Mumbai have not been reported in the state’s overall coronavirus fatality toll.

When the state health minister Rajesh Tope was questioned regarding these allegations, he had replied to reporters saying, “We are not hiding any deaths. Sometimes, more death cases are reported on a particular day. It happens due to the reconciliation of past deaths. There is no question of hiding death cases”.

On Saturday, Mumbai recorded 1,460 fresh COVID-19 cases and 41 deaths. With this the total number of cases to 73,747 and death toll to 4,282. Number of active cases in the city stands at 27,134: Greater Mumbai Municipal Corporation
