Maharashtra government along with the respective municipal corporations are working hard to curb the spread of coronavirus, however, their troubles seem to be increasing with every passing day. With increasing cases, officials at the hospitals are in need of oxygen machines and cylinders. However, while the sale of oxygen cylinders has become more expensive, it is now reported that the price to rent of oxygen machines has also tripled recently.

Addressing the same, the All Food and Drug Licence Holder Foundation (AFDLHF) has take a strict initiative to resolve the overpricing of the oxygen machines and cylinders needed for COVID-19 patients. In a recent move, officials from the  association have lodged a complaint with Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Health Minister Rajesh Tope.

Reports state that the sale of oxygen machines and cylinders, as well as the rentals, have increased  by 25 per cent. Patients who have tested positive for coronavirus need oxygen as per medical guidance, and hence doctors have advised them to continue with the same, even at home, in many health complications. Hence, it has been observed that many people have been buying oxygen cylinders or oxygen machines. Observing the demand, professionals seem to have taken advantage of this.

Sharing more about the same, Abhay Pandey, National President of  AFDLHF, said that the coronavirus outbreak has affected the lives of many, and people are being hospitalised on a daily basis. In such cases, if ordinary citizens are being affected in such ways, then the actions are objectionable. Keeping this in mind, Health Minister Rajesh Tope needs to take some concrete steps immediately.

A month ago, the cylinder was available at INR 500, however, the cost of the same has been increased by 25 per cent now. For those who are financially strapped, this is an additional financial burden. Therefore, the government needs to curb the rising cost of oxygen cylinders for the COVID19 patients in need. This will ensure that the facilities are available to the general patients at reasonable rates.

Data released by the state health department, as of Tuesday, September 22, stated that Maharshtra has a total of 12,42,770 cases, out of which 9,36,554 have recovered and 33,407 have passed away due to the infection. More than 2.7 lakh cases are currently active in the state and undergoing treatment at COVID facilities or in quarantine centres.
