The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)’s sixth genome sequencing report has revealed that Delta subtypes and their derivatives continue to be dominant in COVID-19 cases in Mumbai amid rising concerns over Omicron cases.

A senior health officer said that 297 samples were given for genome sequencing, of which 288 are delta derivatives and its subtypes, while only seven samples have Omicron.

Bifurcating further, the BMC stated 62 per cent of samples have been found to be of subtypes of Delta derivatives, while 32 per cent are subtypes of Delta variant and only two per cent have been detected with the Omicron variant. However, none of the patients have succumbed to the deadly virus.

Of the total 297 samples tested, 62 per cent (183 samples) had the Delta derivatives and 35 per cent (105 samples) were found to be infected by the subtype Delta variant.

Of the 297 patients tested, 103 (35 per cent) were in the age group of 21 to 40 years, 80 (27 per cent) in the age group of 41 to 60 years and 68 patients in the age group 61 to 80 years. About 19 patients had taken the first dose of vaccine, and out of them, three patients had to be admitted to hospital. However, none needed oxygen or had to be admitted to the intensive care unit.

Overall results show that the outbreak in Mumbai is completely under control as a result of vaccination. The genome sequencing of COVID-19 is being carried out since August this year.
