Mumbai has seen over 1,000 deaths so far as a result of coronavirus. An analytical look into the wards shows data that states that 5 of the 24 wards in the city have recorded over 100 deaths each.

The city of Mumbai is divided into different administrative zones. For this purpose, Greater Mumbai is divided into 7 zones, each consisting of 3 to 5 wards named alphabetically. The L ward comprising of Kurla and Saki Naka has seen 154 deaths. In comparison, some states have recorded fewer fatalities. For example, Uttar Pradesh has recorded 169 deaths. Interestingly, the G ward which has seen over 2,000 cases of coronavirus has yet not crossed the 100-mark. The ward that includes Dharavi has reported 85 deaths so far. At a glance, the figures indicate that only 5 wards account for more than 57 per cent of the city’s fatalities.

In wards like K West (Andheri W) and M East (Govandi and Mankhurd), the civic officials stated that most of the deaths recorded were from the slum areas. Another high fatality ward has been H East, which includes Bandra east and Santa Cruz with an average of 50 to 60 cases being reported daily from the ward. The slum areas have especially posed to be a problem given the living conditions. As a result of cramped up spaces, people do not wish to be locked up in homes and usually venture out. Adding to this, the use of community toilets has also turned out to be problematic.

As per reports, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) reported 22 fresh cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, with the 13 coming from its unit that guards the warship building Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) in Mumbai. The MDL is one of the country's leading defence public sector undertaking shipyard that constructs warships and submarines.
