In a significant development, it has come to light that Mumbai has reported its first case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) case. It has been detected to a six-month-old infant at Hiranandani Hospital in city's Powai area.

The latest case has taken the tally of HMPV cases in Maharashtra to three and nine nationwide.

As per reports, the baby was admitted to the hospital on January 1 due to severe cough, chest tightness, and a drop in oxygen levels to 84 per cent. However, she was discharged from the hospital after being admitted for five days.

In order to confirm the virus, the doctors conducted a new rapid PCR test, which returned a positive result. The infant girl was given symptomatic treatment in the ICU with drugs like bronchodilators, as there is no specific treatment for this virus, said the doctors.

Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)'s health department said it did not receive any report of the case but has increased surveillance for influenza and severe respiratory infections.
