As the European countries are witnessing a surge in fresh infections, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has urged the Maharashtra COVID-19 task force to provide them with data on dominant variants in European countries. Officials have stated that it would help them be better prepared for a possible surge in the city.

This development comes a month before Christmas vacations as it is likely that there will be a rise in international travelers coming to India. It could lead to a surge in COVID-19 cases.

BMC's Additional Municipal Commissioner (Health) Suresh Kakani said that with the help of the details, they would check if the vaccines are effective against the variant. In case of some new variant for which the vaccine is ineffective, they will do other preparations in Mumbai.

Adhering to the current norms, if the passenger is fully vaccinated, they are allowed to leave the airport without RT-PCR tests, officials said. Apart from this, as the festive season is approaching, BMC has set up two squads in each of its 24 wards to make sure every citizen exhibits COVID-19 appropriate behavior.

Meanwhile, state health minister Rajesh Tope has said that the third wave of coronavirus is expected to hit Maharashtra in December; however, it will be mild.
