In recent developments, all the teachers of BMC schools have been called on to report for COVID-19 duty as the schools have been transformed into quarantine centres.

At least 180 public and private schools have been transformed into quarantine centres. The teachers are expected to report for duty in the next two days. Mahesh Palkar, the education officer of BMC, in a statement has said that about 300 of 9000 employees have been on COVID-19 duty for about a month now. As the number of quarantine schools increases, adequate staffing is also required to handle the duties.

The BMC teachers will be tasked with the tracing of positive patients and to manage quarantine centres in schools. Those who have been working tirelessly so far in the quarantine centres also need relief, so new replacement is the need of the hour. However, the question of being supplied with adequate PPE remains. Some teachers have also questioned the modes of transportation as travelling during this period remains a challenge with the local trains being shut down.

BMC introduces new strategies

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has released a new roadmap under the new Commissioner to tackle the Coronavirus crisis in the city. Iqbal Singh Chahal took charge as the Commissioner on Friday, while, the previous commissioner Pravin Pardeshi has been transferred to the Urban Development department as Additional Chief Secretary.

According to sources, the BMC's new strategy to tackle the COVID-19 crisis is ruthless tracking and quarantining, and is aiming to reduce the city's cases doubling rate from 10 days to 20 days. According to the new strategy, instead of quarantining three close contacts of positive patients, now 10 close contacts will be quarantined. At the moment, the BMC aims to improve the bed management at the public and private hospitals and to increase the isolation centres and isolation beds to over 75,000.
