The remuneration of health workers who deliver health care services of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been increased by INR 1000 from the month of April. Health workers will get INR 12k as remuneration from the month of April. Last year, after the agitation by the health workers, the administration had decided to increase the salary.

Health nurses are doing their work by providing various health services such as vaccination of children in high society, chawls, slums in Mumbai, distribution of vitamin A, disinfectant program, female sterilization, detection of suicidal patients, programs like polio.

Four thousand health workers of the BMC had protested in the month of March last year for various pending demands like minimum wage, provident fund, house rent allowance. The agitation was called off after the administration promised to find a solution. The administration had also appointed a committee for this. The committee discussed with a delegation of health workers and submitted its report to the BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal on March 28.

However, as no decision was taken regarding the fulfilment of the demands, finally the health workers' association once again called an indefinite strike from June. In order to prevent the health system from collapsing in the face of monsoon, the municipal administration had discussed with the representatives of the health workers and agreed to give a salary increase of INR 3000. Out of which an increase of INR 2000 was agreed to be given from June 2022 and an increase of INR 1000 in the next year in 2023.

Even after the salary hike was agreed, it was not implemented for four months. After follow-up by the organisation, the administration gave a salary increase of INR 2000 to the health workers from June 2022 along with arrears. Therefore their remuneration was INR 11k. This year's increase of INR 1000 has been implemented from April, the president of the Municipal Health Service Employees' Association Adv. Prakash Devdas said.

The court has ordered to pay at least INR 18k to health workers from 2015. Devdas said that the municipal administration has filed a petition in the Bombay High Court against this order and the decision is pending.
