A special committee is also checking reports of COVID-related deaths. The BMC said all public health labs in the city have the needed tools and staff. They are asking people to follow COVID safety rules. Positive samples from across Maharashtra are being sent to the National Institute of Virology and BJ Medical College in Pune for genome testing.
As of May 19, 2025, India had 257 active COVID-19 cases. This shows a small rise in numbers. The rise is not serious now, but it is happening at the same time as new outbreaks in Singapore and Hong Kong. These outbreaks are linked to new Omicron subvariants, like JN.1.JN.1 is a new version of the Omicron variant. It spreads easily, like other Omicron strains. But it has an extra change in its spike protein. The spike protein helps the virus enter human cells.
