Lifestyle diseases have been increasing at alarming rates, hence, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to hire dieticians at civic-run hospitals who will advise patients who hail from poor economic backgrounds. Here, patients will be advised on how to control diabetes, hypertension, and cholesterol. BMC will be inviting dieticians to the 127 civic-run dispensaries in the city.

According to the data compiled by the BMC’s health department, the highest number of cases reported at dispensaries are related to lifestyle diseases.

Dr Padmaja Keskar, BMC's Health Department Executive Director said that there is a misconception among people that lifestyle diseases only happen among the economically sound people. She added that the data gathered from across the city has shown that the trend is being seen among the economically backward, too. That is when they decided to recruit dieticians at all these centres.

Senior doctors and trained medical experts will be visiting the dispensaries to treat patients. Also, if everything goes according to the plan, then advanced machines would be given to these centres for early and better diagnosis.

From tertiary hospitals — KEM Hospital, Parel, Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital, Sion, BYL Nair Hospital, Mumbai Central and Dr RN Cooper Municipal General Hospital, Vile Parle — data from 5.59 lakh patients was studied.

The study revealed that psychiatric ailments, followed by diabetes and hypertension were the leading diagnoses at these facilities.
