As Maharashtra is witnessing a surge in cases of COVID-19, Justice Gautam Patel, a Bombay High Court judge has issued a notice this Wednesday highlighting the overcrowding in the court and asked everyone to follow social distancing norms put in place by State and Central Governments.

Justice Patel warned that if these norms are not followed, his court will suspend operations and take up hearings virtually. The notice was also published on the High Court’s official website. The notice went on to say that only those who have cases listed within Justice Patel’s courtroom should enter while adhering to the safety norms.

“There is far too much overcrowding in Court Room number 37. Advocates and parties are not observing safety norms and precautions. For this reason, with immediate effect, only those who have matters in Court will be permitted entry. There may be a random check and those without matters will be made to leave,” the notice read.

After taking up cases mostly virtually since the pandemic started early last year, the Bombay High Court resumed physical hearings in December 2020. However, as authorities have warned previously, lack of social distancing and mask-wearing at any level could lead to a new spike in cases.
