RN Cooper Hospital in Mumbai will soon reintroduce burn centre as state-of-the-art clinic. Its 16-bed burn unit will undergo a complete upgrade and will now feature 25-beds and modern technology. The municipal authorities sought the advice of leading plastic surgeons for the project. Interestingly, Cooper Hospital's plan to establish a 25-bed burn centre dates back to 2014.

Many civic-run hospitals already have the capacity to treat severe burn cases. But, they lack beds and modern technology. Critical care management and infection control are important for burn patients. They have also been lacking in the existing units.

Existing units also struggle with the complex cases of burns. In those cases, the patients are referred to the National Burns Centre (NBC) in Airoli. NBC is a premier specialized burns hospital renowned across the country. However, the treatment costs are very high there, which poses a significant challenge for patients.

It's worth noting that the expenses for treating a patient with 40 per cent or more burn injuries at the NBC can escalate to a staggering INR 20 lakh or more. Although the NBC occasionally gives waivers to medical fees, the cost of medicines is still bore by patients.
