India has crossed the 10 lakh-mark in Covid-19 positive cases, and the state of Maharashtra still remains the worst-hit in the country. Maharashtra reported the highest single-day spike on Thursday, with 8,641 fresh cases. The total tally in the state has now reached 2,84,281. The state also recorded 266 new deaths taking the fatality total to 11,194. But despite this, for the first time in two months, the death rate in Maharashtra has dropped less than 4 per cent.

According to the data provided by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Mumbai recorded 1,498 fresh cases, taking its total count to 97,751. With 56 new deaths, 5,520 people have succumbed to the deadly virus across the city. Although the densely populated slum area of Dharavi has been successful in curbing the deadly virus, the number of coronavirus positive cases have seen a rise in the western suburban areas of Malad, Kandivali, Borivali and Dahisar.

Mumbai’s neighbouring districts of Thane and Navi Mumbai have seen a massive surge in coronavirus cases the past couple of weeks too. While Thane has recorded more than 47,000 coronavirus cases, Navi Mumbai has also crossed the 10,000-mark. A lockdown till July 19 has been imposed on both the districts to curb the spread of the virus.

Pune district has reported 2,132 fresh Covid-19 cases on Thursday, taking the toll up to 44,986 in the region. There were 49 new deaths and the fatality toll has gone up to 1,216 across the district. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), has reported that there are 10,644 active cases in the district, and over 24,000 patients have recovered so far, with over 1,000 patients being discharged in the past 24 hours. Due to increasing coronavirus cases, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad and rural parts of Pune are currently under a complete 10-day lockdown till July 23.

On Thursday, Maharashtra’s first woman Chief Election Commissioner, Neela Satyanarayan, succumbed to Covid-19 in a suburban hospital in Mumbai at age 72. She was an IAS officer from the branch of 1972, and she was also a celebrated author and poet.
