The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) from Monday, March 22, has started to test people at crowded places like shopping malls, markets, bus stands and railway stations to curb the spread of coronavirus.

However, it has come to light that toll plazas are being neglected in this regard. While entering Mumbai, the Rapid Antigen test (RAT) is not being conducted at Dahisar, Vashi, Mulund and Airoli toll plazas.

Though the BMC has appointed staff at these toll plazas which are the main entrance points in Mumbai, the marshals do not conduct the test, they are only checking whether the passengers are wearing face masks. As a result, this increases the risk for Mumbaikars at a time when the city continues to hit the highest single-day record for coronavirus cases.

In view of rising coronavirus cases, officials are conducting antigen tests at malls, tourist spots, railway stations, ST depots, markets, restaurants. Meanwhile, citizens who come to the mall for shopping will have to get tested at their own expense. Those who refuse to undergo tests or pay the costs will be prosecuted under the Infectious Diseases Act.

According to reports, 24,220 COVID-19 tests were recorded in the last 24 hours.

On Sunday, March 21, Mumbai recorded 3,775 people testing positive for the coronavirus taking the COVID-19 tally in the city to over 3.62 lakhs. On the other hand, in Maharashtra, with 30,535 persons testing positive in the last 24 hours, the state's COVID-19 tally rose to 24,79,682.
