The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has set up a 150-bed facility at the ESIC Kamgar Hospital at Kandivali, which will be dedicated for COVID-19 patients. Of these, 10 beds have been reserved as ICU units. Mumbai currently has five dedicated COVID-19 hospitals: Nair Hospital, SevenHills Hospital, Kasturba Hospital, St. George Hospital and GT Hospital. Other than SevenHills Hospital, all the other medical facilities are in south Mumbai. Therefore, a dedicated facility in the western suburbs (ESIC Kamgar Hospital) will prove helpful.

Anticipating the rise in the number of cases in Mumbai, the BMC has readied the facility in Kandivali to ensure that they do not experience a shortage of beds for COVID-19 patients. Mumbai has recorded 35,485 cases so far.

The ESIC Hospital at Kandivali has a capacity of 300 beds and the civic body had earlier decided to use only 63 beds for COVID-19 patients. However, a proposal to extend the number of beds dedicated to COVID-19 patients to 150, was recently approved by the BMC. The civic officials on Thursday visited the hospital and inspected the possible arrangements that can be carried out at the hospital.

As the facility will expand its operations, coronavirus patients from Worli, Mulund and other areas are said to be shifted here. Of the 63 beds at present, 22 have oxygen support. The civic body has already started preparations to add another 87 beds and all of them will have oxygen support and among them, 10 beds will be reserved for critical patients. Meanwhile, the remaining 150 beds are being set aside for non-COVID patients.
