Maharashtra Records 8,240 Fresh Cases, Death Toll Crosses 12,000 Mark

With 8,240 fresh Covid-19 cases on Monday, Maharashtra's total tally has reached 3,18,695. The death toll in the state has crossed the 12,000-mark. On Monday, the state recorded 176 new deaths and the fatality toll has reached 12,030. According to the health department of the state, the number of recovered people has reached 1,75,029, and there are 1,31,334 active cases in the state. 

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) has crossed the 2 lakh-mark in coronavirus cases. While over one lakh come from Mumbai city, the remaining one lakh cases are from areas of Thane district, Navi Mumbai, Palghar, and Raigad. These areas have seen a sudden rise in cases since last month. The state government has extended the lockdown till July 31 in these areas to curb the spread of the virus. 

According to the data provided by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the area of Dharavi recorded 12 fresh cases on Monday. The total number of cases in the densely populated slums have now reached 2,492. Despite the high numbers, Dharavi has only 147 active cases according to the civic body. However, the civic body has stopped disclosing the death toll of the area.

On Monday, Pune district recorded its highest single-day hike in coronavirus infected patients with 2,601 fresh cases, taking the total tally of the district to 54,013. To curb the spread of the virus, a 10-day lockdown had earlier been imposed on Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad and other rural parts of Pune till July 23.

The number of police personnel testing positive for the deadly virus has also increased in the state, especially across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). As of Monday, 1,596 police personnel in the state had active infections, while 87 have succumbed to the virus. 

Not only this but even politicians too have not been spared by this virus. On Monday, Mumbai’s Guardian Minister Aslam Shaikh, took to Twitter to announce that he has tested positive for coronavirus and is isolating himself. He also informed citizens that he is currently asymptomatic and has urged all his contacts to get themselves tested. After Public Works Department Minister Ashok Chavan, Housing Minister Jitendra Awhad and Social Justice Minister Dhananjay Munde, Shaikh happens to be the fourth minister in the Uddhav Thackeray-led state government to get infected by the deadly virus.
