Maharashtra Witnesses 9,895 Fresh COVID-19 Cases, Records Highest Single-Day Deaths

The state's Mumbai Metropolitan Region has witnessed a total of 3,972 new cases and 130 deaths in the last 24 hours.

Maharashtra has recorded 9,895 fresh coronavirus cases on Thursday, taking the state's total tally to 3,47,502. In the last 24 hours, the state witnessed its highest COVID-19 related casualties with 298 new deaths. The fatality toll in Maharashtra is now at 12,854 and as per the health department, the state currently has 1,40,092 active cases. 

Mumbai has reported 1,245 new cases on Thursday, taking the city’s tally over 1.05 lakh. With 55 new deaths, the city has over 5,000 casualties. Mumbai’s neighbouring areas have continued to see a surge in positive cases since last month. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) has witnessed a total of 3,972 new cases and 130 deaths in the last 24 hours. 


While Pune reported 1,801 new cases, its neighbouring township Pimpri-Chinchwad registered 950 cases on Thursday. The cases in Pune district have surged over 62,000 with over 1,500 deaths. As per media reports, since the prevalence of COVID-19 is the highest in Mumbai an Pune, the Serum Institute of India (SII) has said that both the regions will help test the efficiency of the coronavirus vaccine developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca. By the end of August, around 4,000 to 5,000 people in Mumbai and Pune will be injected with the vaccine as part of the trials. Serum Institute of India is a Pune-based pharma firm which is the local manufacturer of the vaccine. 


Nagpur district on Thursday reported 172 new COVID-19 cases, taking the total tally up to 3,465. According to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), three patients succumbed to the deadly infection in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll of the district to 64. A total of 2,213 patients have recovered according to the civic body, while there are 1,188  active cases in the district. The city of Aurangabad has also witnessed an increase in the number of coronavirus cases in the past couple of days. Aurangabad recorded 182 new cases and so far has more than 12,000 cases.
