The number of cases in Mumbai is increasing every day. On Tuesday, Dharavi recorded six new cases of COVID-19, and there were two new deaths reported from this area. This takes the tally of coronavirus cases for Asia's largest slum to 55. So far, Dharavi has reported seven deaths due to COVID-19.

“On Tuesday, we found six new COVID-19 positive cases in Dharavi. We’re trying to trace high- and low-risk contacts of these patients. We’ve also managed to successfully track down many new COVID-19 positive cases because of our vigorous screening of patients showing symptoms of the disease,” said Kiran Dighavkar, assistant commissioner, G-North Ward, BMC.

A 55-year-old man from Janata Society and a 43-year-old woman from Rajiv Nagar are among the six new COVID-19 positive cases in Dharavi. While the rapidly increasing number of cases in the slums is indeed a matter of concern. However, BMC is trying to assure people that they have everything under control and the increasing numbers are due to vigorous screenings that are being carried out in these regions.

Earlier, a 52-year-old man from Kalyanwadi from Rajawadi Hospital and another man from Muslimnagar had died at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital. Both the hospitals are run by the civic body.

As the cases keep emerging in Dharavi, the BMC has earmarked 29 containment zones and six Red Zones in the slum area, which reported over 15 COVID-19 positive cases.

As per the data provided by the civic body, they have quarantined 2,184 Dharavi residents and tested 138 high-risk contacts and 3,450 low-risk contacts. The civic authorities are also making sure that the quarantined people get essential supplies such as food and medicine.

Earlier today, BMC had declared Worli-Koliwada as a containment zone to curb the spread of coronavirus in the area. Worli has recorded 20 per cent of the cases in Mumbai.
