Despite relentless efforts from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Maharashtra government, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to haunt the state and the city. On Saturday, Maharashtra recorded 1,165 fresh cases, of which, 722 were from Mumbai. Throughout the day, Mumbai,  recorded 27 deaths, taking the fatality count in the state's capital to 489. 

Over the last week, the number of deaths due to coronavirus had come down. However, in the last three days, the fatality count has risen once again. Mumbai recorded 27 deaths on May 9, 25 deaths on May 8 and 26 deaths on May 7. With 722 new cases, Mumbai's tally of COVID-19 affected patients has reached 12,689. 

While the emergence of new cases in the city is a growing concern for the municipal corporation, the BMC can see a ray of hope with 203 patients recovering throughout the day. So far, 2,792 Mumbaikars have recovered from COVID-19 and have been discharged.

The data by the Health Ministry revealed that of the total coronavirus patients in Mumbai, 59 per cent, i.e. 5,228 persons, are asymptomatic. It further said that 39 per cent of patients, i.e. 3,209 persons, showed mild to medium symptoms whereas only five per cent of patients, i.e. 236 persons, were under critical condition. Three per cent of patients were being provided with oxygen and the remaining one per cent of patients were on ventilator support.

That being said, Maharashtra's COVID-19 case count has crossed the 20,000-mark as 1,165 fresh cases were reported in the 24 hours. Alongside, the state reported 48 deaths throughout the day, taking its death toll to 779. 27 of the deaths were recorded in Mumbai, nine in Pune, eight in Malegaon, one in Pune district, one in Nanded and one in Amaravati.
