Amid a steep rise in the daily caseload of COVID-19, it has come to light that Maharashtra has reported four new patients with BA.5 variant, according to a report released by BJ Medical College, Pune.

This development came after the genome Sequencing process of three patients done at the National Institute of Virology, Pune and one at BJ Medical College, Pune.

These patients are residents of Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Pune. All these patients are women in the age group of 19 to 36 years.

According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, on Wednesday, Mumbai on Wednesday, June 16, reported 2,293 new coronavirus cases and one fresh death linked to the infection. It is the highest daily count since January 23.

With this, the city has crossed the 2,000 daily case mark after almost five months. On January 23, Mumbai had logged 2,550 COVID-19 cases and 13 fatalities.

Maharashtra recorded 4,024 new cases on Wednesday – a jump of 36.12% from 2,956 infections on Tuesday. Meanwhile, two deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours in the state.

However, in a relieving news amid the fear of fourth wave, the percentage of hospitalization is nearly 2-3 per cent despite this spike.

Earlier, Maharashtra had detected two cases of the BA.5 subvariant on Tuesday, June 14. A day before, three cases of BA.4 and one of BA.5 Omicron sub-variants were found a day before.
