Mumbai is now in the spotlight to have detected the maximum number of reported cases of COVID-19 in Maharashtra.

This development came after Kerala reported the first case of JN 1 variant of coronavirus in the country.

According to the state’s latest health report, of the 35 active coronavirus cases in Maharashtra, 27 cases are from Mumbai. All the infected individuals are under home isolation, and none in hospitals.

Amid the rising concern of coronavirus again in the country, the Center on Monday, December 18, asked states and Union Territories to heighten continuous surveillance.

It is pertinent to note that this is after several months that the state has reported detections in double digit.

As per the state’s weekly report, there were eight cases between November 22 to 27, which rose to 14 between November 28 to December 4. The weekly count of cases further increased to 22 between December 5 -11, and to 25 in the week ending December 18.

On Tuesday alone, December 19, Mumbai reported eight out of Maharashtra’s 11 new COVID-19 cases.

Moreover, in response to the identification of the first case of the new JN.1 variant in the country, Sudhansh Pant, the union health secretary, issued a letter to states on Monday, December 18, asking them to maintain a constant state of vigilance regarding the Covid situation. He said that through consistent and collaborative efforts between the centre and state governments, India has successfully sustained a trajectory with consistently low rates.
