Eighteen patients have died in the last 24 hours at the Government Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Thane, Maharashtra. Thane Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar said the casualties included ten women and eight men, including six from Thane city, four from Kalyan, three from Sahapur, one each from Bhiwandi, Ulhasnagar, Govandi, one from an undisclosed location and another.


Bangar said that Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has ordered the formation of an independent inquiry committee. The committee, headed by the commissioner of health services, will focus on probing the clinical aspects surrounding these deaths. CM Eknath Shinde said the incident was extremely painful. He said that further action would be taken as per the report of the committee.

CM Shinde said that the incident of death of patients in Thane hospital is unfortunate. According to the hospital administration, some of these patients were admitted in very serious condition, some patients were also referred from private hospitals, the said patients were admitted here on different days with different types of diseases.


Talks have also been held with Public Health Minister Tanaji Sawant and Guardian Minister of Thane district Shambhu Raje Desai is in constant touch with the health system.
