The National Medical Commission (NMC) will be changing the way medical colleges in Maharashtra receive accreditation. The existing process of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has been deemed insufficient. To tackle this, NMC is introducing the National Board of Accreditation for Medical Sciences. It will standardise the process across the country.

The new accreditation will be based on 11 key criteria. This includes the quality of surgeries performed, the facilities available, and the number of inpatients treated. This move aims to ensure that private medical colleges that have NAAC certification but no medical science prerequisites attract applicants.

This change is under The National Medical Commission Bill, 2019. This bill will make the accreditation process the same for all 5,000 medical colleges across the nation. This means even colleges that previously received high grades from the NAAC but lacked essential infrastructure have had their seats reduced by the NMC.

On August 6, NMC will unveil the new framework. This will impact approximately 65 medical colleges in Maharashtra. Earlier, NAAC was responsible for accrediting medical colleges. But it was found lacking in qualifications for evaluating medical institutions.
