Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Monday, September 27, 2021, launched the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, in the presence of Shri Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare. While addressing the nation, he said that the campaign of strengthening health facilities that have been going for the last seven years is entering a new phase today and the mission has the potential of bringing a revolutionary change in India’s health facilities.

Sharing more information, he underlined the fact that with 130 crore Aadhaar numbers, 118 crore mobile subscribers, about 80 crore internet users, about 43 crore Jan Dhan bank accounts, this will be the big connected infrastructure anywhere in the world. This digital infrastructure is aimed at bringing everything from ration to administration to the common Indian in a fast and transparent manner and the way technology is being deployed in governance reforms today is unprecedented.

PM also remarked that the Arogya Setu app has helped significantly in preventing the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) infection in India. Besides this, he also spoke about Co-WIN and its role in making India achieve a record administration of about 90 crore vaccine doses today.

Continuing with the theme of the use of technology in health, he emphasised that there has also been an unprecedented expansion of telemedicine during the COVID-19 lockdown whereby approximately 125 crores remote consultations have been completed through e-Sanjeevani initiative which was started as facility aimed at connecting thousands of people living in remote parts of the country with doctors from popular hospitals from several cities in India, and all this, while sitting at home.

He remarked that the Ayushman Bharat-PMJAY has addressed a key concern faced by a few people in India and with the initiative over two crore people have availed the facility of free treatment, half of which were women. PM added that diseases are one of the key reasons to push families into the vicious cycle of poverty and women of the families are the worst sufferers as they always relegate their health issues to the background. Hence, the effort was made  to personally meet some beneficiaries and experience the benefits of the scheme thereby interact and understand that these healthcare solutions are proving to become a big investment for the country.

Talking about the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, PM Modi said that this will now connect the digital health solutions of hospitals across the country with each other, and will not only make the processes of hospitals simplified but also will increase ease of living, he added.  Under this program, every citizen will now get a 14 digit digital health ID using which their health record will be digitally protected.

He informed that the team is working on a health model that is holistic and inclusive, which stresses preventive healthcare. Discussion was held on unprecedented reforms in health education whereby a much larger number of doctors and par medical manpower is being created in India now as compared to a few years ago. PM added that a comprehensive network of AIIMS and other modern health institutions is being established in the country and work on establishing one medical college in every three Lok Sabha constituencies. Besides this, the plan also focuses on strengthening health facilities in villages and informed that in the villages, primary health centre networks and wellness centres. Currently, over 80,000 such centres have already been operationalised.

Expressing his gratitude, Amit Shah took to Twitter and said, “The Modi Government is continuously committed to providing a healthy, safe and dignified life to citizens. I express my heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi for launching the 'Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission' (ABDM) today.”

Minister for Health and Family Welfare Mansukh Mandaviya thanked the PM and said, “This step of Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission would transform the healthcare sector and bring revolutionary change to the lives of all citizens.” He expressed his confidence in the mission and noted its quick implementation in the six Union Territories.

"The Digital Ecosystem will also enable a host of other facilities like Digital Consultation, Consent of patients in letting medical practitioners access their records, etc.," he added, and expressed hope in making today’s achievement a milestone in India’s history.
