Hospitals across Mumbai are witnessing coronavirus patients coming in with cases of gangrene and intestinal clots, a new report says.

Around a dozen such cases have been reportedly treated by surgeons and physicians in the city. Doctors have warned that people who complain of unexplained and severe stomach pain should seek medical attention immediately.

As per studies, around 16 to 30 per cent of COVID-19 patients also exhibit gastrointestinal symptoms with little to no indications of respiratory issues.

Moreover, doctors say that patients with intestinal clots can show acute mesenteric ischemia which is a rare abdominal condition that comes with a high likelihood of mortality.

Gastrointestinal and Laparoscopic surgeon, Dr Hemant Patil who consults Fortis Hospitals said that he has diagnosed five cases of intestinal gangrene so far with one of them succumbing to the condition due to COVID-related complications while two of them required surgeries to get rid of the gangrene.

The Maharashtra COVID-19 Task Force is expected to provide more information on this particular issue, especially since it’s also impacting a section of vaccinated people.
