Sion Hospital OPD opens, even as doctors continue protest

SHARES

The out patients department at Sion Hospital was officially opened on Tuesday morning, with a poster put up outside the hospital gates announcing it. Resident doctors at the hospital had been resorting to a mass leave for the last few days, in the wake of an attack on a doctor by a deceased patient’s relatives. Resident doctors across other civic hospitals across Maharashtra also carried out similar protests in solidarity with the Sion hospital resident doctors.

On Tuesday, despite the OPD being thrown open, there was confusion if the doctors would really attend to the patients. The doctors, on their part,  want security to be beefed up and CCTVs to be installed on the premises. A relative accompanying a patient said that they are suffering and doctors should call off their strike. “We are not doing this protest to harm patients but we are doing it for our own rights,” said Dr Ajay, one of the residents. He added that although doctors had resorted to mass leave, most of them were still looking after patients who are in need of medical attention.
