Mumbai's COVID-19 doubling rate reaches 359 days

As the number of COVID-19 cases in the city has seen a sharp decline, many COVID care centres across Mumbai are been shut, recently Jumbo COVID care centre at Mahalakshmi Race Course was shut as the centre has not seen single patients since it was set up in July. The doubling rate in Mumbai too has reached up to 359 days.

Mumbai reported 503 new COVID-19 cases, 594 recoveries and 11 deaths on Tuesday, December 22, taking the total number of cases in the financial capital to 2,87,816. According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, the number of active cases has come down to 7,650 and 26,82,97 patients have completely recovered so far. The death toll is at 11,019 in the city. The recovery rate stands at 93 per cent. At present 22,25,190 tests have been conducted by the BMC. There are 256 contaminated zones in slums and chawls while 2,862 buildings are sealed by the BMC.

Meanwhile, in the wake of a new strain of COVID-19 spreading rapidly in the UK. On Monday, December 21 Maharashtra government imposed a night curfew in municipal corporation areas from December 22 to January 5 as a precautionary measure to curb the spread of contagious disease. As per the state government directives, the curfew will remain between 11 pm to 6 am till January 5 in the financial capital. BMC also issued a set of guidelines for the passengers arriving in Mumbai from Europe and Middle East countries will be compulsory sent to seven days institutional quarantine with their own expenses.

On Tuesday, December 22, Maharashtra recorded 3,106 fresh cases of the novel coronavirus. This propelled the state's COVID-19 tally to 19,02,458. Currently, there are 58,376 active cases in the state. With 4,122 COVID-19 patients discharged in the day, the number of recovered soared to 17,94,080.

With the outbreak of the coronavirus, 75 people have lost their lives a total of 48,876 people in the state have died owing to the contagious disease. While 4,94,815 persons are under home quarantine, 3,660 others have been admitted to institutional quarantine centres. The COVID-19 recovery rate and fatality rate in the state stand at 94.3 per cent, and 2.57 per cent respectively.
